Having once been enjoyed solely by a fairly niche audience of enthusiasts, video gaming now has far more mainstream visibility and popularity and a far bigger audience than before. Due to the rapid growth in the number of people choosing to play video games in their spare time, a lot of major brands are seeking to work with the publishers and developers of these games to help them reach potential new customers.
The world of gaming is one of non-stop technological evolution, and the latest next-gen consoles are certainly a testament to this fact. Pushing the boundaries of their impressive processing capabilities, they are able to producing jaw-dropping, life-like graphics and immerse us in amazingly detailed open-worlds. The world building and storytelling heights that developers have managed to hit in the last few years with have all but settled the argument for videogames being art. But can they become reality?
Games recognized the best in 2016, description and appeal of these developments for the gaming audience.
In September’s issue of Game Informer, the “esteemed” publication seems to be initiating its own quiet assassination concurrent with the #GamerGate wars of Twitter. While they do not seem to have leap on the “fuck all gamers” bandwagon with most major games reporting outlets, they do seem to be digging beneath the walls that separate major gaming from indie gaming. Turn to the two-page spread on 31 and behold! Matt Bertz throws down his wall-less theory of gaming entitled ‘The Mutating Meaning of the Word “Indie.”‘ I call offended and uproarious bullshit. Indie isn’t mutating, it means just what it always has: independent. What this should be entitled is “Why we want to destroy the meaning behind the term indie.” Strap in, this another rant of bombastic proportions.
